In a recent interview with Lena Dunham, Hillary Clinton discussed her attachment to a Donna Karen dress which made waves when she was photographed wearing it in 1993. Apparently, she gained a great deal of criticism at the time for looking ‘too sexy’ for a First Lady, with some saying her outfit was outdated. Others, though, saw Hillary’s aesthetic for what it was: a simple, chic look which has no need to adhere to time or age. Donna Karen herself has stated that the shoulders always look good, and that photograph’s legacy can be seen everywhere.

Donna Karen continues to pull focus to the shoulders in her current range, which includes this stunning all-over sequin backless gown. Of course, we don’t all have £2,200 to spend on this look, but there are plenty of high street options.

This ASOS bodycon dress is a good dupe for Hillary’s look, with a high neckline in a soft, supple fabric.

If you like your dresses a little more relaxed, this Motel version of the classic look is softer and undoubtedly more comfortable, with draped shoulder holes and a flared skirt.

This little number From Nextshe is perfect if you like the look of cosy woollens but don’t actually care about heat retention. We love the oversized neck and the general irony of this look, whether or not the presidential hopeful would approve.

Which cold shoulder look would you go for?
