Style and fashion are two very different things. They go together, of course, but you don’t have to follow the latest trends to be a stylish person. Rather than focusing your efforts on the latest fashions, you should work on your own personal style. If you can find this then you’re going to feel more confident no matter what you’re wearing.

What are your five go-to items?

Think this through, what are the five items you always think about reaching for when getting dressed? Mine are a LBD with sheer sides, patterned trousers, Dr Martens boots, a Supernatural t-shirt and a leather jacket with spiky shoulders. This tells me that I edge towards the more alternative side. Of course, I don’t dress like this all the time. I can do pretty dresses, jeans and a more folk-rock kind of style but I feel most confident in something that’s a little edgy.

Who are your style icons?

Again, the people you admire for how they dress are probably very close to your own style. Now, don’t copy these people. Take elements of their style and work it into your lifestyle. Lady Gaga’s shoes are outrageous and exciting but what normal person can wear heels that high all day? Take your love for these silly shoes and make it more you. Go for edgy, exciting brands that do some more practical styles. Take a look at Jeffrey Campbell (pictured above), Miista and Irregular Choice.

Think about your personality

What clothes and styles fit your personality? If you’re the sporty type then adidas by Stella McCartney might be the brand for you. If you’ve got a bit more of a rock and roll edge, look at Balmain or Alexander McQueen. If you’re a girlie girl, look for brands such as Vionnet or Oscar de la Renta.
