Let’s say you’ve got your outfit photography down to a T. From here, though, you’re going to want to take some photos when you’re out and about. When you’re on the move, you can’t always rely on DSLR cameras, tripods and perfect lighting. Sometimes you’ve got to improvise.
Get a good little point and shoot camera
We’ve covered some of these in our photography Shoplinkz list. A small camera, with a little bit of power is great for popping in your bag ready for when inspiration strikes. Get to know the automatic and manual settings well as you might find that some situations may require a change in settings.
What should you be photographing?
Other than yourself, there are plenty of things you should be photographing that will add some interest to your blog. These photos don’t have to make up a main feature but they can be used as an accompaniment to any future blog posts. Here are some ideas:
Beautiful clothing stores. If you’re out and about doing a bit of shopping and come across a great store or a fantastic looking item, snap a picture. In a lot of cases it’s best to ask the store manager/owner if you’re allowed.
Art. Whether it’s something you saw at a museum or something interesting happening on the street. (Check permissions for photographing art. The museum/gallery you’re in should make the rules quite obvious. Generally, you’re not allowed to use flash.)
Food. I love seeing what people are eating, especially if it’s unusual and interestingly presented.
Events you visited and things you saw. It doesn’t have to be a car. It could be a show, some fireworks or someone’s beautiful pet.
Arty shots. If you see something that’s perfect for a photo, go for it. Perhaps the light is just right, or the colors catch your eye.
Your travels. It doesn’t matter how far afield you go, your readers will want to see what you’ve been up to.
Get those little details
Get up close and personal with your outfits, the places you’ve been and the people you’ve met. Don’t feel like you have to tell the whole story all at once. A series of detailed photos can really add something special to a photography post.
Don’t be afraid to play with the depth of field with these shots.
You should also experiment with unusual angles and play with the light you have at your disposal. This cathedral doorway in Cologne was uplit and it made for a great shot looking upwards towards the night sky,
Let us know in the comments what you’ve been photographing recently, we’d love to see!
